SEL Curriculum

The YLA is excited to announce our involvement in the implementation of a social-emotional learning (SEL) curriculum within the Nederland High school(s)! As the Youth Leadership Academy and the Mountain Coalition for Youth, many of our members have been actively participating in holding meetings, researching, and hopefully soon initiating a school-wide SEL program. This program will focus on teaching kids self-management of emotions and actions, self-awareness of one’s emotions, values, strengths, and challenges, responsible decision making, forming positive relationships, working in teams and solving conflict, and social awareness showing understanding and empathy for others!

These are just a few ideas we have for this project and we plan to hold meetings throughout the months of July, August, and onward to discuss with staff, students, and community members how best to serve the youth of Nederland! We have also already held meetings with the administration of Nederland Middle-Senior High School on how we can most effectively implement this program by next year! Another key area MCY and YLA have been working extensively on are a Social Emotional Learning (SEL) task force to help establish a cohesive SEL curriculum, at Nederland Middle-Senior High School (NMSHS). This SEL task force will work with students, parents, teachers, admin, and other community members to identify the best course of action for implementing a core SEL curriculum at the middle and high school with widespread support and buy-in from teachers, parents, and admin. If you have any input on an SEL curriculum or some practices you’d like to see at the middle and high school, please let us know and the task force can use that information to help our work in creating a great SEL program for NMSHS. If you have any questions or concerns about this SEL program or want to inquire about the task force please connect with us!
